Obesity

What is Obesity?

Obesity is a complicated health condition that involves a high amount of body fat that leads to extremely excessive body weight. It is not a mere cosmetic concern, but a medical issue that can lead to serious diseases when left unchecked.

Causes of Obesity

Obesity can be a result of different activities or underlying health conditions and is sometimes unavoidable. For some people, it is the extra calories that eventually leads to obesity. Common causes of obesity are:

  • Slower metabolic rate
  • Irregular sleep
  • Genetics
  • Pregnancy
  • Certain health conditions that account for increased weight or obesity include:
  • Cushing Syndrome
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
  • Prader-Willi Syndrome

Symptoms of Obesity

The main symptom of obesity is weight gain for unexplainable reasons or specific health conditions. A person is obese if their BMI (Body Mass Index) is 30 or above.

The BMI scale categorizes individuals into different weight status, such as:

  • BMI below 18.5: Underweight
  • BMI range of 18.5 to 24.9: Normal/healthy
  • BMI range of 25 to 29.9: Overweight/unhealthy
  • BMI of 30 or above: Obesity

Complications of Obesity

When you have a high ratio of body fat to muscle, it puts a strain on your bones and internal organs. It also leads to inflammation of various body parts. If not kept under control or not treated on time, obesity may result in various health complications like:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Breast cancer, colon cancer, and endometrial cancer
  • High cholesterol
  • Fatty liver disease
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Infertility
  • Arthritis
  • Sleep apnea
  • Breathing issues

When to see a doctor

If you have recently noticed your weight increasing steadily with no visible reasons, you might need to book an appointment with your physician. The doctor will evaluate your health conditions and may suggest you to a nutritionist or dietician for better weight-loss options.
