What is Paraquat Poisoning?

Paraquat is an extremely toxic weed killer or chemical herbicide used across the world. Also popular by its brand name Gramoxone, Paraquat is among the most common herbicides that can lead to fatal poisoning when inhaled or ingested.

In countries like the USA, only license holders of paraquat chemical are allowed to get access to the herbicide. If ingested, it starts showing immediate symptoms and needs emergency medical help.

    Symptoms of paraquat poisoning

    • Difficulty breathing
    • Seizures
    • Coma
    • Shock
    • Nosebleed
    • Throat burning or pain
    • Stomach pain
    • Blood vomiting
    • Shortness of breath

    Complications of paraquat poisoning

    When ingested or inhaled, the chemical herbicide can lead to several health issues that may also be permanent if not addressed on time:

    • Breathing in paraquat can lead to lung damage
    • Sickness on touching the skin
    • Damage to liver, kidneys, and esophagus
    • When swallowed, it can be fatal
    • Causes damage to the body on touching the lining f the stomach, mouth, or intestines.
    • Long-term exposure can result in scarring of the lungs (pulmonary fibrosis), making it difficult to breathe.

    When exposed to paraquat, you should get yourself diagnosed for chemical poisoning, especially if you notice any signs and symptoms after its use. Your doctor will determine the vital signs and monitor them, such as your pulse, body temperature, blood pressure, and breathing rate.

    • Chest X-ray
    • Blood and urine tests
    • Electrocardiogram or heart tracing (ECG)
    • Endoscopy to check for any damage to the stomach and esophagus
    • Bronchoscopy to examine for lung damage
