Hypertension

What is Hypertension?

Hypertension or High blood pressure is a condition in which your blood pressure increases against the standard level. Getting frequent readings of your blood pressure is essential for people with hypertension. It measures the amount the blood flowing through the blood vessels and the resistance it encounters while the heart pumps out the blood to different parts of the body.

Causes of hypertension

The causes of hypertension are not always certain in all individuals. It largely depends on the type of hypertension you suffer from. Primary and Secondary hypertension are the two types of hypertension.

Primary Hypertension

When a person encounters primary hypertension, it is mostly hereditary, or a result of lifestyle modifications. The possible reasons for primary hypertension include:

  • Stress
  • Overweight
  • Diet
  • Minimal physical activity

Secondary Hypertension

Secondary hypertension occurs due to different reasons, such as

  • Smoking
  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • Kidney disease
  • Thyroid issues
  • Congenital heart problems
  • Drug and alcohol abuse
  • Adrenal gland issues
  • Side effects of medications
  • Endocrine tumors

Symptoms of hypertension

Hypertension doesn’t cause any instant symptoms. However, people having a medical record of hypertension for years may experience certain obvious symptoms, and it might result in other health issues, such as:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Flushing
  • Nosebleeds
  • Changes in vision
  • Chest pain

In some cases, patients may not have any symptoms at all.

When to see a doctor

If you have hypertension, you must keep your blood pressure levels in check and see the doctor for routine checkups every six months. In case of any symptoms of severe hypertension, immediate medical assistance is recommended. For secondary hypertension, you will be prescribed regular medication to keep the BP levels in control.
