Chronic Urticaria

What is Chronic Urticaria?

Chronic Urticaria (CU) is a complicated skin allergy that may begin as a benign condition but may turn into severe internal disease. A broad range of etiologies has been proposed while understanding the causes of CU, such as physical, vasculitic, infective idiopathic and psychological.

Chronic urticaria doesn’t show immediate risk but can be considered as an implication of a skin allergy that could result in anaphylactic shock.

Causes of Chronic Urticaria

Chronic urticaria can be caused due to a combination of factors, and it is not contagious. It may be something that irritates you in the surrounding, your genetic makeup, and your immune system. Sometimes, it can be a response to a fungal, viral or bacterial infection.

Here are a few causes that can trigger chronic hives or urticaria:

  • Infection
  • Scratching
  • Pain medications
  • Cold or heat
  • Parasites or insects
  • Stress
  • Exercise
  • Food or alcohol
  • Sunlight
  • Pressure on skin sue to tight clothing

Symptoms of chronic urticaria

Some common signs and symptoms of CU include:

  • Itching (at times severe)
  • Swollen or raised red welt on the skin
  • Patches that las over 6 weeks.
  • Swelling of eyelids, lips or throat.

Note: The chronic hives may tend to fade, change the size, and reappear. Exercise, heat or stress may worsen the symptoms.

When to see a doctor

If you see red raised/swollen patches in your skin or any other symptoms similar to CU that lasts for weeks, you must see a doctor. Your doctor will start by taking records of your medical history and conducting a physical examination, before carrying out blood tests for allergy testing.

Mostly, OTC antihistamines work well for chronic urticaria. However, if that doesn’t help, your doctor may suggest different types of treatment options, such as short-term oral corticosteroids, H2 blockers, monoclonal antibodies, anti-depressants, and more based on your allergic conditions.
