What is Cardiovascular disease?
Cardiovascular disease is a medical term used for describing any conditions affecting the heart or blood vessels. Most cases of CVD are associated with a higher risk of blood clots and a build-up of fatty deposits within the arteries (atherosclerosis).
There are different types of cardiovascular disease or heart disease, such as:
- Arrhythmia: Abnormality in the heart rhythm
- Atherosclerosis: Hardening of the arteries
- Cardiomyopathy: Hardening or weakening of the heart muscles
- Coronary Artery Disease (CAD): Buildup of plaque in the arteries, also called ischemic heart disease.
- Congenital heart defects: Heart irregularities since birth.
- Heart infections: Infections in the heart due to viruses, bacteria, or parasites.
Causes of cardiovascular diseases
Different types of CVDs are related to different cause, but the most basic ones include:

- Blockages in the arteries
- Smoking
- Poor sleep hygiene
- High carbohydrate and high-fat diet
- Physical inactivity
- Radiation therapy
- Sleep Apnea
- Obesity
- Stress
- Air Pollution
- Excessive alcohol intake
- COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder) or other lung disorders
Symptoms of cardiovascular disease
The symptoms of CVDs are based on its type. We have mentioned the most common signs and symptoms for you to reach out for medical help.
- Dizzyness
- Fainting
- Fatigue
- Tiring easily
- Skin rashes
- Lightheadedness
- Dry or persistent cough
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain or discomfort
- Fluttering in the chest
- Fluctuations in heartbeat
- Blue of pale gray skin color
- Swelling of hands, feet, and ankles
- Shortness of breath in infants during feedings
- Pain in the jaw, neck, throat, back or upper abdomen
- Swelling in the abdomen, legs, or areas around the eyes
- Numbness, pain, or weakness of coldness in your legs or arms
