Allergic Airway Disease

What is Allergic Airway Disease?

Allergic Airway Disease or Reactive Airway Disease (RAD) is not an accurate clinical term, but used by medical professionals to describe different respiratory conditions. People who have allergic airway disease mostly have bronchial tubes that overreact to some kind of irritant.

RAD is significantly used for patients who have a bronchial spasm or wheezing and not diagnosed with asthma yet. The term may also be used when talking about COPD, especially under circumstances where the exact reason for the symptoms is not declared.

Causes of Airway Allergic Disease

Allergic airway disease mainly occurs in case of an infection caused by triggering irritants. Some of the main causes include:

  • Smoke
  • Dust
  • Dander or pet hair
  • Pollen
  • Mould/mildew
  • Stress
  • Exercise
  • Weather changes
  • Perfume/string odors

Symptoms of allergic airway disease

The symptoms of RAD or allergic airway disease are not very different than those of asthma. Some of the most noticed ones include:

  • Coughing
  • Wheezing
  • Excess mucus in the bronchial tube
  • Difficulty breathing/shortness of breath
  • Hypersensitive bronchial tubes
  • Swollen mucus membrane in the bronchial tube

Note: At times, two or more irritants can combine to cause the allergy, but those irritants won’t individually.

When to see a doctor

If you are having difficulty breathing and not able to figure out the reason, you need to reach out a medical professional immediately. The physician will carry out medical tests and ask about your medical history to understand the possible irritants that triggered the reaction.

Some of the possible treatment options can be relaxation and breathing exercises, treating the infection/virus, or using a rescue inhaler. The best treatment option is recommended based on the severity of your allergic condition and the triggers.

In case you are about to undergo surgery and having shortness of breath or coughing, report your doctor immediately.

You can book an important with Dr M.V. Rao to get checked for allergic airway disease.
