Chikungunya

What is Chikungunya?

Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne viral fever that is caused by the outbreak of a virus back in 1952. The virus causing the life-threatening fever is an RNA (Ribonucleic Acid) virus from the Togaviridae family’s alphavirus genus.

Causes of chikungunya

Chikungunya is transmitted by the bites of infected female mosquitoes. Most common varieties of mosquitoes responsible for chikungunya are Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti. The mosquitoes usually bite during the day.

Symptoms of chikungunya

The signs and symptoms to look out for are quite similar to other mosquito-borne diseases like dengue fever. The first signs show up within a few days of the bite. The most general symptoms include:

  • High fever
  • Headache
  • Joint pain
  • Rash
  • Muscle pain
  • Swelling around the joints

The less common signs may be a maculopapular rash, nausea, conjunctivitis and vomiting.

Complications of chikungunya

Chikungunya can cause various complications when left untreated especially for older adults. Some of the main complications are:

  • Retinitis: Inflammation of the retina
  • Hepatitis: Liver inflammation
  • Myocarditis: Heart muscle inflammation
  • Hemorrhage: Internal bleeding
  • Myelitis: Spinal cord inflammation
  • Nephritis: kidney Inflammation
  • Meningoencephalitis: Inflammation of the cerebral tissue and the membranes of the brain
  • Cranial nerve palsies: Dysfunctioning of the cranial nerves
  • Guillain-Barre syndrome: Rare peripheral nervous system disease due to muscle weakness

When to see a doctor

Soon after you notice prolonged fever, joint pain or any other early symptoms that suspects chikungunya, book a consultation with Dr Rao. A blood test can easily diagnose the presence of the infecting virus.

As there’s no vaccine for chikungunya yet, antibiotics and pain-relieving medications are what doctor prescribe along with intensive care of the patient even after the fever subsides. Physiotherapy may be effective for prolonged joint problems.
