Cholesterol

What is Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a waxy element present in our blood. Our body requires cholesterol to develop healthy cells, but increased levels of the substance can lead to a greater risk of cardiovascular disease. Due to high cholesterol, you may develop fatty deposits in the blood vessels that eventually grow to disrupt smooth blood flow through the arteries.

At times, these deposits may break abruptly and develop into a clot that results in a stroke or heart attack.

Causes of high cholesterol

The most noted cause of developing high cholesterol is an unhealthy diet and lifestyle. Other common causes include:

  • Intake of bad fats – saturated fat in processed foods, dairy products, baked goods, etc.
  • Lack of physical activities
  • Smoking
  • Family history of high cholesterol

Symptoms

Typically, high cholesterol has no visible symptoms. It can be detected by a simple blood test. Individuals older than 20 should get their cholesterol levels checked every four to six years. A simple blood test called fasting lipid profile will be done to evaluate different forms of cholesterol in your body – good cholesterol, bad cholesterol, and triglycerides.

Some of the signs that you should start getting your cholesterol level checked regularly include:

  • Hypertension
  • Smoke
  • Overweight

When to see a doctor

As soon as you notice the risks of high cholesterol, you should see a doctor for a cholesterol test, especially if you are above 20 and a regular smoker with unhealthy eating habits. Your doctor will do a detailed body checkup to suggest the best ways of leading a healthy lifestyle.

Older adults with underlying health issues like hypertension and diabetes should get their cholesterol levels checked more frequently. An appointment with DR M. V. Rao will help you with a complete diagnosis of your health conditions and cholesterol levels.
