Diabetes

What is Diabetes Mellitus?

Diabetes or Diabetes Mellitus refers to the medical condition in which the blood sugar levels of your body increases than the standard level. It happens because your body fails to use the insulin properly, leaving too much glucose in your blood. When not diagnosed and treated in time, diabetes can lead to severe health issues that can also be life-threatening.

Causes of Diabetes

There are three types of diabetes:

  1. Type 1 diabetes (INSULIN DEPENDENT)
Though the exact causes of type 1 diabetes are still not known, it is mostly suspected to be genetic . Its A chronic condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin.
  2. Type 2 diabetes (NON INSULIN DEPENDENT)
A condition where the body either doesn’t produce enough insulin, or it resists insulin. The reason behind this is uncertain, but type 2 diabetes develops slowly, leaving some or no initial symptoms.
  3. Gestational diabetes
It is a condition in which your blood sugar levels become high during pregnancy. It affects up to 10% of women each year. There are two classes of gestational diabetes. Women with class A1 can manage it through diet and exercise. Those who have class A2 need to take insulin or other medications.

Symptoms

  • Excessive thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Weight loss
  • Unusual tiredness
  • Genital itching
  • Blurred vision
  • Wounds and cuts take longer to heal
The major difference between the two types of diabetes is that type 1 symptoms show up quicker than type 2 and thus can be treated on time.
