Stroke

What is Stroke?

Stroke is cerebrovascular disease, a condition that arises when the blood supply to your brain (a part of the brain) is reduced or interrupted. It prevents the brain tissue from getting nutrients and oxygen, and the brain cells start dying within minutes.

A stroke is a call for a medical emergency, and on-time treatment is crucial. Different types of strokes have specific causes and symptoms.

Three main types of stroke are:

  • Ischemic Stroke: It is the most common type of stroke that occurs with a blood clot preventing oxygen and blood from reaching a part of the brain.
  • Hemorrhagic Stroke: In this type, the blood vessel ruptures and results in Aneurysms or AVMs (Arteriovenous Malformations).
  • Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA): It occurs with reduced blood flow to an area of the brain for a short period. It is also called a ministroke.

Causes of stroke

Each type of stroke comes with its particular set of potential causes. The most general ones include:

  • Smoking

  • Heart disease, carotid artery disease or any other vascular disease

Symptoms of stroke

The symptoms of a stroke are seen in the parts of the body that are under the control of the damaged areas of the brain. Here are the most usual symptoms of stroke that should be attended by a medical expert at the earliest:
