Typhoid Fever

What is Typhoid Fever?

Typhoid fever is a bacterial infection that can lead to serious complications when not attended on time. It spreads to different areas of the body affecting multiple organs. The fever is caused by a bacterium Salmonella typhi.

Typhoid fever is contagious – the person infected can pass it to the bodies getting close or by any kind of contact (direct or indirect).

Causes of typhoid fever

Typically, typhoid is a water-borne disease that indicates consuming contaminated water or food prepared using contaminated water. The bacterium resides in water and contaminates it. People having an acute illness can infect the surrounding water supply through stool. The bacteria is present in high concentration in the stool.

Contamination of water supply can lead to contamination of food supply. The bacteria can live for weeks in dried sewage or water.

    When to see a doctor

Reach out to a doctor soon after you suspect typhoid fever. The doctor will carry out a test to detect the presence of bacteria. If that’s not enough, urine tests and other blood tests are carried out to diagnose typhoid fever.

Mostly, antibiotics work well for killing the Salmonella bacteria. In case you or anyone in your family is suspecting typhoid fever, book an appointment with Dr Rao and get detailed diagnosis and treatment.
